David Cranston is Emeritus Associate Professor of Surgery in the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences in the University of Oxford, Honorary Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Oxford University Hospitals Foundation Trust and Emeritus Fellow of Green Templeton College Oxford. He qualified from Bristol University in 1975 and was awarded his D.Phil in Oxford in 1986 for kidney transplantation-based research with Professor Sir Peter Morris, Nuffield Professor of Surgery.

He has supervised 18 research fellows and has been the author of over 150 research publications and book chapters, and has written some popular books on the history of medicine.
