Sometimes your neck and chest are also flushed. Unlike blushing, facial flushing is typically a bolder reddening of the skin. 

There are many reasons flushing might happen such as embarrassment, excitement, anxiety or stress. Fluctuations in hormone levels (menopause) and some skin disorders such as rosacea, high temperatures or the consumption of certain foods or alcohol can also cause facial flushing. 

In some cases facial flushing can be a symptom of a more serious problem.

Allergic reactions to:

  • Food
  • Medication
  • Insect bites
  • Hayfever
  • Dust
  • Animal hair
  • Cosmetics

Medical conditions:

  • Fever
  • Heart attack
  • Heat stroke
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Overactive thyroid
  • Anaphylaxis (severe, life threatening allergic reaction)

Flushing can be treated by simply applying a cold compress to your face or drinking cool liquids.
