Sheffield Fitness and Wellbeing Centre celebrates cutting its energy usage by 25% as part of an ambitious campaign to be more sustainable

Sheffield Fitness and Wellbeing Centre, run by Nuffield Health, the UK’s largest healthcare charity, has announced that it’s reduced its energy usage by an impressive 25% during 2023, as the charity’s #SwitchOff campaign made an impact across the UK.

The aim of the healthcare charity’s #SwitchOff campaign is to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions within its fitness, hospital and wellbeing facilities located within the UK.

The Sheffield Fitness and Wellbeing Centre, located in Napier Street, became the leading Nuffield Health location in the UK, winning a prestigious energy award, after reducing its energy consumption by initiatives such as shutting down lighting and computers when not in use.

“We are delighted to be awarded Nuffield Health’s energy site of year for 2023,” says Nicki Cox, Operations Manager at Nuffield Health Sheffield Fitness and Wellbeing Centre.

“The whole team, from receptionists to our cleaners, have been involved in our energy efficiency initiatives, including turning off every light when not in use, turning off chargers and through to using air conditioning more efficiently. Our aim is always to continue providing a best-in-class experience to our members while saving energy and thanks to every member of our team for their support,” adds Nicki.

Nuffield Health made an overall 11.4% carbon reduction during 2023. The healthcare charity created a toolkit for all of its 111 fitness and wellbeing centres, and 37 hospitals and healthcare clinics across the UK, to promote best-in-class energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction initiatives. This included a checklist and specialist advice in sustainability practices.

“We’re committed to reducing carbon emissions and working towards a more sustainable healthcare model across our connected health and wellbeing services,” comments Vicky Hadley, Nuffield Health’s Head of Social Impact and Sustainability.

“With climate change the world’s biggest health threat, we need to act now to protect the future. These actions that we’re taking to achieve them, demonstrate how our purpose, to build a healthier nation, is core to everything we do,” adds Vicky.
