Congenital abnormalities (sometimes called birth defects) are defined as any defect or abnormality at birth that may impact a child’s ability to function normally.

Examples of congenital abnormalities include:
- Down syndrome
- Cleft lip
- Spina bifida
- Club foot
- Heart defects
A very small percentage of babies are born with congenital abnormalities. During your pregnancy you may be offered a fetal anomaly or 20 week scan to closely exam how your baby is developing and offer you reassurance.
