Fungal infections
Fungal infections can occur on many parts of your body. Some fungal infections cause a skin rash. Others cause drying or peeling of the skin. Fungal infections on the scalp may cause hair loss.
Certain environments or conditions can create ideal breeding ground for fungal infections. Moist or wet skin that is now allowed to dry off properly can be prone to infection. Exposure in areas such as swimming pools, changing rooms and showers can also bring on infections. A weakness in your immune system caused by medications or chronic illness can also make you prone to fungal infections.
Common fungal infections of the skin include:
- Ringworm – groin and other areas
- Athlete’s foot
- Nail infections – fingers and toes
- Yeast infections such as Thrush are also fungal infections.
If you experience symptoms of fungal infection your GP may take a swab of the area to be sent to a lab for analysis. In cases of persistent infection you may be referred to a specialist consultant for further treatment.
