Sinusitis (rhinosinusitis)
Sinusitis is the medical term for inflammation of the lining of the cavities behind your cheekbones and forehead (your sinuses).
A more accurate term for sinusitis is rhinosinusitis since your sinus cavities and the lining that covers them are usually inflamed.
Symptoms of both these conditions include:
- Facial pain
- Blocked nose or increased discharge from the nose
- Fever
- Loss of smell or taste
Sinusitis can be caused by several factors such as a bacterial infection, flu virus or allergy.
Symptoms may fade on their own. However if you experience long term sinusitis or your sinusitis keeps coming back your GP may refer you to a specialist consultant.
