With more than 25 years of clinical background, he has had structured clinical and academic training in the UK and abroad to further his skills and expertise in respiratory and general internal medicine. He was awarded the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians in 2004 and embarked on building his higher specialist clinical and research training in Scotland. His academic MD was from the University of Dundee, in the field of asthma and airway inflammation, focusing on respirable drug dose delivery and the unified airway which includes both the upper and the lower airways with several high-impact publications. His keen interest in pulmonary vascular diseases and lung transplantation led to his appointment as a senior national fellow in pulmonary hypertension within the Northern National Pulmonary Hypertension Service at the Freeman Hospital where he also completed his specialist training in lung transplantation & pulmonary hypertension. He built on his bronchoscopy expertise with advanced interventional bronchoscopy training supported by the Scadding Morriston Davies Fellowship program with Professor Lutz Freitag & Kaid Darwiche at the Ruhrlandklinik, which is one of the two leading global centres of excellence in interventional bronchoscopy in Germany.

He was appointed to his first consultant position after completing his specialist training in 2011. He built on his substantive consultant expertise delivering excellence in specialised care delivery both in the UK and overseas. He has authored several high-impact research publications including international guidelines in transplantation and his research continues to explore new therapeutic management strategies in transplantation and pulmonary hypertension. His role within the NHS involves delivering excellence in highly specialised centrally commissioned services alongside colleagues at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne and supporting the educational/training needs of higher specialist trainees alongside ongoing collaborative clinical research within the NHS and Newcastle University.
