Dr Hayward has been a Consultant Gastroenterologist and General Physician for 10 years, with a broad experience of luminal gastroenterology. His training and experience is reflected in his broad areas of interest which include Inflammatory, Infective and Irritable bowel diseases. He is lead colonoscopist for the South Devon Screening Centre on the Plymouth site and has an interest in therapeutic endoscopy. His practice is nationally scrutinised and audited.
Professional Training:
Dr Hayward qualified from St Mary's Hospital Medical School in 1986. His post-graduate training in internal medicine, infectious diseases and gastroenterology took place at St George's Hospital (infectious diseases), St Mark's Hospital and Chelsea & Westminster Hospital (gastroenterology and nutrition) in London and Kingston, Ealing and Hillingdon Hospitals in the Home Counties (gastroenterology and general internal medicine).
He spent three years (1993-5) in full-time academic study as an MRG training fellow. This provided detailed training in mucosal immunology and the balance between the gut and gut flora. This work was submitted as a thesis to the University of London leading to PhD.
From 1997 to 2000 Dr Hayward worked as Specialist Registrar at St Mark's Hospital, London and continued his endoscopy training at the Wolfson Endoscopy Unit. He completed clinical training and developed particular expertise in the management of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases, short bowel syndrome and severe functional abdominal conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome.
