About
Dr Murphy completed his undergraduate training at Southampton University between 1987-1993. He obtained his medical degree and an intercalated BSc in biomedical sciences. He then trained in General Internal Medicine in the Wessex region between 1993-1997. He obtained his MRCP in 1996. He had his specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology also in the Wessex region from 1997-2004. During this time he was awarded a prestigious clinical training fellowship by the Medical Research Council to study his PhD in the field of liver fibrosis between 2000-2003. He was awarded his PhD in 2004. He was appointed as Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester in 2004 and is clinical lead for Endoscopy services in Winchester.
Dr Murphy has a broad experience in all areas of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He has experience of over 1000 endoscopic procedures a year. He is also a General Physician and is an examiner for the MRCP PACES exam.
Other interests
Inflammatory bowel disease, Reflux disease, Dyspepsia, Barrett’s oesophagus, iron deficiency anaemia, irritable bowel symptoms, investigation of diarrhoea, abdominal pain, diverticular disease, Achalasia and other swallowing problems.
Fatty liver, assessment and management of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, autoimmune liver disease, alcohol related liver disease, viral hepatitis, ascites, endoscopic therapy of varices.
Quality assurance in endoscopy, colonoscopy, advanced polypectomy, bowel cancer screening colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy, palliative endoscopic stenting, ERCP.
Personal interests
Dr Murphy is married with three children. He enjoys sailing adventures. He also enjoys spending time with his family walking, cycling, sailing and skiing. He enjoys music and enjoys playing the guitar, piano and drums. He has an interest in renewable energy sources including solar power and biodiesel.

Research
Dr Murphy has published work in the fields of liver fibrosis and inflammatory bowel disease. He has been local investigator in a number of national clinical trials including Photostent 2, BOSS and ELUCIDATE. He has also recruited patients to the CONSTRUCT trial in inflammatory bowel disease and Thalidomide trials in cancer patients. He remains involved in teaching trainees in Gastroenterology and medical students from Southampton University.
