Special interests

Julie Doughty qualified at The University of Liverpool in 1986, completing her training in Glasgow in General Surgery with a Special Interest in Breast. Subsequently she was appointed Senior Lecturer, then Consultant Breast Surgeon at the Western Infirmary Glasgow in 1998. She has always been passionate about the management of Breast Cancer and was awarded her MD Thesis from The University of Liverpool on the Regional Management of Locally Advanced and Recurrent Breast Cancer.

Although a busy NHS Consultant, she has been a Trustee of the Association of Breast Surgeons since 1998, holding many National positions and is currently Chair of the Education and Training Committee for the whole of the UK. 

Personal interests

Julie is an avid theatre goer, actively supporting The Citizens Theatre in Glasgow and The Old Vic and Donmar Theatres in London; she is also a supporter and member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. She is the Surgical Advisor to the British Touring car Championship and has worked with many leading race drivers and teams including Nissan, Bentley and Aston Martin at Le Mans. She enjoys gardening and cooking and travelling.

Research

1. Dr Doughty has published extensively on Breast Cancer Management; during the last 5 years alone publishing in excess of 70 Book Chapters, Papers and Abstracts. Her areas of interest are Endocrine Therapy in Breast Cancer, Oncoplastic Breast Surgery, Breast Cancer recurrence, Bone Health in Breast Cancer patients and Breast Cancer treatment in the older patient.
2. Following on from her published research on The Patterns of Recurrence in Breast Cancer, she was invited to speak Internationally, visiting several prestigious centres, including The John Wayne Cancer Institute of California; The Bronx–Lebanon Hospital New York, The Jackson Memorial Hospital Miami; The Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai and The Charles Garner Hospital in Perth, Australia.
3. She was invited to deliver The Centenary Lecture for the Royal Danish College of Surgeons.
4. She was involved in developing National Guidelines for the Management of Bone Health in Breast Cancer Patients.
5. She continues to organise many Post-Graduate Educational Meetings for young and established Breast Surgeons and established in Glasgow the Internationally renowned Association of Breast Surgeons Trainee Meeting.  In recognition she has recently been awarded an Honorary Senior Lectureship at The University of East Anglia.
6. She is an elected member of the British Breast Group and hosted their meeting on behalf of Glasgow in 2013
