About

Dr Read trained at the University of Cambridge medical school (1995-2000) and following a junior doctor medical rotation in Southampton, was appointed to the cardiology Registrar training programme in the Eastern deanery based around Papworth Hospital, Cambridge in 2004.

Dr Read's sub-speciality expertise is in Interventional Cardiology (coronary angioplasty and stenting) and in addition to his training in Papworth and Norwich, he undertook a 15 month Interventional Fellow position at Westmead Hospital in Sydney, Australia. This provided an intensive period of Interventional Cardiology training at the busiest Heart Attack centre in Australia. After returning from Sydney, Dr Read completed his training at Papworth Hospital and was appointed substantive Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Ipswich Hospital and Papworth Hospital NHS Trusts in 2013.

Dr Read conducts cardiology outpatient clinics at Ipswich Hospital in all aspects of general cardiology and performs coronary angiography, angioplasty and stenting procedures in the Heart Centre at Ipswich Hospital. Research

During his cardiology Registrar training Dr Read completed a 2-year period of research at Addenbrooke's and Papworth Hospitals in Cambridge in the field of cardioprotection from coronary ischaemia and was awarded the higher Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Cambridge in 2011.

This research used non-invasive dobutamine stress echocardiography and invasive conductance catheters during angioplasty procedures to investigate the beneficial effects of a hormone (glucagon-like peptide-1) and its ability to protect the heart from damage caused by coronary ischaemia (blocked coronary arteries). This successful work resulted in several journal publications and was presented at American and European conferences. It has led to a larger clinical trial of the hormone at Papworth Hospital.

Dr Read won the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society young investigator award for 2011
