Research
During his cardiology Registrar training Dr Read completed a 2-year period of research at Addenbrooke's and Papworth Hospitals in Cambridge in the field of cardioprotection from coronary ischaemia and was awarded the higher Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Cambridge in 2011.
This research used non-invasive dobutamine stress echocardiography and invasive conductance catheters during angioplasty procedures to investigate the beneficial effects of a hormone (glucagon-like peptide-1) and its ability to protect the heart from damage caused by coronary ischaemia (blocked coronary arteries). This successful work resulted in several journal publications and was presented at American and European conferences. It has led to a larger clinical trial of the hormone at Papworth Hospital.
Dr Read won the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society young investigator award for 2011
