About
Philip Hughes trained in Plymouth, St George's Hospital, London and the National Heart and Lung Institute at the Royal Brompton Hospital. He returned to Plymouth as a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine in 1999. Since then he has overseen the establishment of a lung cancer fast-track pathway, home ventilation programme, sleep apnoea service and works with two of the national pulmonary hypertension centres to provide clinics for pulmonary hypertension patients in the South West. Dr Hughes is now the senior Respiratory Consultant at Derriford with regular commitments on the wards and in clinic. He is also a Royal College of Physicians examiner.
Other interests
Interests include pulmonary hypertension, sleep apnoea, home ventilation, asbestos induced lung injury and other work related pulmonary complaints, asthma and COPD.

Research
During a period of full-time research at the NHLI, Dr Hughes published several papers studying the respiratory muscles. Since then, several small research projects have been reported at international meetings in London, Europe and America.
