Dr Prabhakaran has over 20 years experience in clinical, educational and leadership roles in the UK, currently practicing as an NHS Consultant specialising in adult and elderly emotional, cognitive and neuropsychiatric disorders.
Dr Prabhakaran has a truly integrative and personalised approach and incorporates advanced testing including genomics, bio markers, nutritional and fitness assessment and brain imaging. He has a special interest in neuropsychiatric conditions and advises on a range of cognitive strengthening and stimulation programmes.
He became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2002 having trained at the Imperial College Psychiatric Training Scheme in London. He has been a Consultant in the NHS since 2006 and was joint course director for psychological medicine at Imperial College School of Medicine.
Neuropsychiatry and Cognitive Disorders:
- Assessment and management of cognitive disorders, including Mild Cognitive Impairment, Alzheimer’s, Vascular dementia, Parkinson’s Disease dementia and Lewy Body dementia.
- Management of personality and behavior changes in the context of cognitive and neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis.
Adult Psychiatry:
- Assessment and management of Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive disorder, Panic disorder, Post-traumatic Stress disorder and Bipolar disorder.
- Evaluation of Adult ADHD and Asperger’s syndrome.
Special interests
Neuropsychiatry and Cognitive Disorders:
- Assessment and management of cognitive disorders, including Mild Cognitive Impairment, Alzheimer’s dementia, Vascular dementia, Parkinson’s Disease dementia, Lewy Body dementia, Fronto-temporal dementia.
- Effective management and evaluation of personality and behavior changes in the context of cognitive and neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis.
- Wide-ranging experience of working with culturally and ethnically diverse patient groups. Memory clinic assessments and use of Cholinesterase inhibitors and cognitive stimulation therapy.
- Experience in assessment and management of patients with epilepsy, history of stroke and psychosomatic disorders.
- Community and Inpatient physical and cognitive rehabilitation.
Adult Psychiatry
- Assessment and management of common psychiatric and psychological conditions such as Depression, Anxiety Disorders, including Obsessive Compulsive disorder, Post-traumatic Stress disorder as well as psychotic conditions such as Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder.
- Evaluation of Adult ADHD and Asperger’s syndrome.
Other interests
Extensive experience in the preparation of medico-legal reports and provides expert evidence in the High Court, the Court of Protection, the Mental Health Review Tribunal, the Crown Court and the Coroners Court.
