Dr Westwell is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Sussex Cancer Centre specialising in the care and treatment of patients with breast cancer and malignant melanoma.
Dr Westwell studied medicine at the University of Bristol Medical School. After gaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1998 she undertook specialist oncology training at University College Hospital in London and Mount Vernon Hospital in Middlesex. She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists in 2003 and spent 12 months as a clinical fellow at The Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. She was appointed to her current consultant post in Brighton in 2008.
Dr Westwell has a holistic approach to patient care. She focuses on the individualisation of treatment and in addition to using chemotherapy and radiotherapy Dr Westwell is interested in the use of immunotherapy and novel targeted therapies to treat breast cancer and melanoma.
She works with the multi-disciplinary breast cancer teams in Brighton and Eastbourne and the regional specialist skin cancer team to provide high-quality evidence-based treatment and care for her patients.
In 2009 Dr Westwell was appointed Chair of the Sussex Cancer Network Skin Tumour Group and successfully lead the Skin Cancer Network Tumour Group through the first external peer review process. She was appointed BSUH Trust Lead for Acute Oncology in 2010 and Chair of the Sussex Cancer Network Acute Oncology Tumour Group in 2011, leading the development of the new acute oncology service at the RSCH site.

Research
Dr Westwell has a keen interest in research and strives to offer all patients access to suitable clinical trials. She is the principal investigator for several national clinical trials and works closely with the team at the Royal Marsden Hospital referring patients for national clinical trials unavailable locally in Brighton.
Dr Westwell has an active teaching and training role. She is the regional clinical tutor for the specialist registrar clinical oncology trainees. She regularly teaches Brighton and Sussex University medical students within the clinic and the dermatology special study module. She is a Medical School finals examiner.
Dr Westwell co-authored the national British HIV Association guidelines for HIV related malignancies in 2014.
