About
Dr Gurunathan is a consultant cardiologist in advanced cardiovascular imaging, heart failure and cardio-oncology at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.
He has extensive experience in general cardiology, with particular expertise in complex echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance, and is clinical lead for cardio-oncology, and one of the few specialists in the country in this field. Cardio-oncology involves looking after the cardiac needs of cancer patients working to reduce the cardiac side effects of cancer treatments, as well as the long term surveillance of individuals previously treated for cancer.
Dr Gurunathan undertook a PhD with Imperial College London in advanced cardiovascular imaging in coronary artery disease and heart failure, achieving several academic awards for his research.
He completed his subspecialty training in major London hospitals including St George’s, St Thomas’ and Bart’s Hospital. Prior to specialist training, he undertook a prestigious heart failure fellowship with the world-renown Professor Cleland.
Dr Gurunathan is the departmental clinical governance lead, helping to facilitate high standards of care throughout the department. He is also passionate about medical education and is educational and clinical supervisor to a range of trainee junior doctors.
