Mr Abu-Own’s vascular interests include Varicose Veins, Venous Ulcers and DVT. He is a council member of the Venous Forum of the Royal Society of Medicine and a referee for the British Journal of Surgery & International Journal of Surgery.
He has forty publications between peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and published abstracts and has presented these to scientific societies at National and International level.

His main interests are:

1) Varicose Veins: Duplex assessment and modern treatment, including Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) and US-guided Foam Sclerotherapy

2) Hernia Repair: Has specialist interest in hernia repair and introduced the use of proline plug technique for repair of primary inguinal hernia Primary inguinal hernia repair utilizing the mesh ‘plug’ technique A Abu-Own, M Onwudike, K.A Haque,S.G Barker. Research

His main research interests were Venous Disease, Varicose Veins, Deep Vein Thrombosis and Microcirculation. Mr Abu-Own carried out clinical research in the early nineties, culminating in the award of a Ph.D. degree from University College London (UCL) in 1995. This research was based in the Vascular Laboratory of the Middlesex Hospital, where he acquired in-depth knowledge of all the investigative methods available for the assessment of both the macro and microcirculation in venous and arterial disease. He is a faculty member and course leader for the Royal College Basic Surgical Skills (BSS) course at the ICENI Centre- Colchester.
