About
I trained in medicine at the University of Leicester qualifying in 1984. After my house jobs I joined the Royal Air Force as a doctor. Following my Officer training I spent my first year in uniform at the Tri-National Tornado Training Establishment at RAF Cottesmore, Rutland working as a GP. I then entered surgical training and passed my FRCS (Edinburgh) in 1989. Prior to my exit from RAF service in April 1990, I was posted to Belize, Central America for 3 months as commander of the Field Surgical Team, British Forces Belize.
After my RAF service, I undertook my Higher Surgical Training in Orthopaedics on the Hammersmith Hospital rotation, under the guidance of Professor Sean Hughes. I passed my exit exam from training (FRCS (Orth)) in November 1993. The following year I was the Leverhulme fellow at the University of Zambia working as a Lecturer/ Senior Registrar at the University Teaching Hospital, Lusaka.
I was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery (Honorary Consultant) in 1994 at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital taking up my post in January 1995 on return from Africa. The post was general Orthopaedics with a special interest in Upper Limb Surgery based primarily at Charing Cross Hospital.
In 1997 I was awarded the Biomet/ British Elbow and Shoulder Society Travelling Fellowship and had 6 weeks visiting prestigious units in 1998 to enhance my knowledge and skills. My practice has become increasingly focused on Shoulder and Elbow surgery alone in more recent years. In addition, I undertake Medico-legal work for personal injury which again reflects my sub-specialty interests.
My philosophy is to pursue all treatment options in a cascade of complexity and only to offer surgery when it is appropriate and other courses of action have been tried. In the NHS we work as a multidisciplinary team (MDT) with our Physiotherapists and Radiologists and this team approach is something that underpins my private practice too. If a case is particularly complex or unusual I have no hesitation in seeking the counsel of my colleagues in the Shoulder Unit at Imperial College. This ensures that my patients' care has many inputs and does not rely on a single opinion.
Mr Andrew Forester sees adults and children.
