About
Mr Antony R Fitton qualified at the Royal London Hospital in 1989 with distinction in Surgery. In pursuing a career in surgery he trained at the Royal London Hospital, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, The Royal Marsden Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital, obtaining his Fellowship to the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1992.
His aspiration to Plastic Surgery was founded after two months of apprenticeship with a “battle surgeon from Afghanistan” in Mount Hagan, Papua New Guinea. In 1993 Mr Fitton embarked on his training in Plastic Surgery at the Riverside Centre for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Charing Cross, London (where he was introduced to gender reassignment surgical technique) and then the Welsh Centre for Burns, Plastic & Reconstructive and Maxillofacial Surgery in Chepstow and Swansea. Mr Fitton also trained in The Mersey Regional Burns, Plastic and Reconstructive Centre in Liverpool.
In 1996 he was awarded research grant funding from the CM Matthews fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Pattern Masser Memorial Research Fund of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons for his investigation of neuro-muscular pathophysiology after nerve injury. In 2002 he received a degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) for his thesis “Muscle Recover after Nerve Injury – Enhancement by b agonists”.
After successfully sitting the final intercollegiate examination in Plastic Surgery for the diploma of FRCS(plast), Mr Fitton was entered onto the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council in 2002. He has completed 6 years of accredited training in Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery.
He was appointed a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgeon to Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust in 2002. Before taking up this role he spent 6 months fine tuning his training at the Wellington Burns, Plastic and Craniofacial Centre, New Zealand honing his skills in microvascular reconstruction, breast and chest reconstruction and Craniofacial Head and Neck Surgery.
Mr Fitton now has 16 years experience as a Consultant and has gathered a wealth of experience in many aspects of reconstructive surgery which now encompasses transgender chest reconstruction. In this regard he can offer qualified opinion and a broad range of surgical options to help patients on their journey of gender reassignment. Mr Fitton is licensed as Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon by the GMC.
