About

Mr Theophilou is a consultant gynaecologist and gynaecological oncology surgeon.
He qualified from ‘The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland’ in 2005.

He undertook general obstetric and gynaecological training in Lancashire and completed a Medical Doctorate in ‘Biospectroscopy towards screening and diagnosis of cancer’.
He sub-specialised as a gynaecological oncology surgeon in Leeds and was appointed as a consultant at St James’s University Hospital in 2017.
He is a registered colposcopist with the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP) and a member of the British Gynaecological Cancer Society (BGCS) and European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO).

He has established the gynaecological oncology robotic surgery service in St James’s Hospital, Leeds.
He is an honorary senior lecturer at Leeds University. He has developed courses for post-graduate medical education, including cadaveric surgery.

He is the clinical director for the Gynaecology Optimal Pathway Group for the West Yorkshire & Harrogate Cancer Alliance and the Lead Clinician for the Central Gynaecological Oncology multidisciplinary team at St James’s Hospital, Leeds.

His research interests include the use of artificial intelligence for improving diagnosis and treatment outcomes in gynaecological cancer.  He is also interested in collaborative intelligence to improve communication between health care professionals and patients.

  • Gynaecological Cancer Surgery for peritoneal, ovarian, fallopian tube, uterine, cervical, vaginal and vulval cancer.
  • Surgical and medical treatment of Endometriosis, Uterine Fibroids, Pelvic Adhesions.
  • Diagnostic and Operative Hysteroscopy, Colposcopy, Vulvoscopy.
  • Treatment of Pelvic Pain, Menstrual Cycle and Menopausal Problems.

Other interests

Minimal access surgery for some urogynaecological problems, including sacrocolpopexy.
