About

Mr Merrick has been practicing Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery for over 25 years, after qualifying in both Dentistry (1990) and Medicine (1997) at Sheffield University. After qualifying in medicine, he undertook 3 years of basic surgical training, before carrying out a further 5 years of specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical training (the surgery of the face, mouth and jaws) in Manchester. His speciality training focused on surgery for cancer of the head and neck and facial reconstruction. He also undertook a specialist fellowship in Head and Neck cancer surgery in Glasgow and also a Cosmetic Facial Surgery fellowship in the United States.

Since then, Mr. Merrick has been working as both a full-time NHS consultant in Maxillofacial surgery at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton; as well as carrying out a private surgical practice. 

Special interests

Mr Merrick has a special interest in the following tests and treatments at Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital. 

- Simple removal of skin lesions of the face, ears, head, neck and scalp (lumps, lipomas, sebaceous cysts, moles, skin tags and other skin lesions).
- Management of Skin Cancers of the face, head and neck (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma).
- Surgical removal of skin lesions of the face, head, neck and scalp, along with skin grafts and skin flaps for reconstruction.
- Diagnosis and management (including Incisional or excisional biopsies) of oral lesions, skin lesions, lumps and bumps of the face, head and neck.    
- Surgical management of head and neck cancer.
- Bone grafting to both the upper and lower jaws; and sinus lifting.
- Consultant opinion, diagnosis and management of oral medicine conditions - OPG (orthopantogram) X-ray, MRI/CT Scanning and reporting.
- Treatment for facial trauma, pain and Temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ).
- Management of salivary gland conditions, parotid gland tumours (benign and malignant), or white patches (e.g. Lichen planus) in the mouth.
- Surgical removal of teeth and, or roots under local and general anaesthetic or sedation.

- Surgical placement of dental implants under local and general anaesthetic or sedation.

Other interests

Much of Mr Merrick's work in head and neck cancer revolves around a commitment to providing the best form of rehabilitation from the surgical impact of cancer to the face and jaws. This often involves working closely with his colleagues in restorative dentistry particularly with the provision of dental implants to improve the quality of life for such patients.

For the past four years, Graham has also been volunteering for a charity called Facing Africa (UK Registered Charity no: 1129170). The charity undertakes facial surgery to treat the effects of NOMA, an infection which is specific to the face and can have devastating consequences. The group carries out twice yearly surgical missions to Ethiopia to perform complex facial reconstructive surgery on the victims of NOMA, other facial deformities and tumours. 

Personal interests

Along with a busy family life, he enjoys sailing, climbing and is a keen cyclist.
