About

Mr Hywel Davies has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Bristol since 2009, giving him over 15 years’ experience at the cutting edge of knee surgery and treatment. He holds NHS appointments at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, where he performs trauma surgery and clinics, and also at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Southmead Hospital where he performs planned elective knee surgery. He, therefore, has a well-respected local practice, and is always on hand in the city, should any issues arise.

Mr Davies is solely focussed on reconstructive surgery and treatment of the knee, including sports injuries. He performs the full range of knee surgery, with repair of damaged ligaments, cartilage and menisci. He also operates on the degenerating knee, performing full joint replacements, revision surgery and unicompartmental replacements, whenever possible replacing only the affected part of the knee. He takes a personal approach with his patients, striving to make them the centre of the decision-making process, taking time to explain a diagnosis and going through all treatment options, including non-surgical. He is experienced in and teaches the most up-to-date techniques, including robotic and patient-specific surgery.

Mr Davies trained at Imperial College London, and also earned a further BSc degree in Sports Physiology, with a thesis performed at the Institute of Human Performance, Stanmore and the British Olympic Medical Centre. He undertook six years of Orthopaedic Specialist training on the Bristol Rotation, during which time he also obtained a Master’s degree in Sports Medicine. Spending extra time in sports medicine clinics and learning from experts in allied professions such as Physiotherapy, Physiology and Psychology, gave him a balanced approach to his practice.

Following his orthopaedic training, Mr Davies spent a year honing his skills in knee and sports injury surgery and assessment in two leading clinics abroad: Adidas Sports Injury clinic in Auckland, New Zealand and Perth, Australia. He has also visited other leading centres across the globe to learn from their expertise.

Outside work, he maintains an active interest in sport. A keen cyclist and runner, Mr Davies has competed in Ironman Triathlon, and was previously a rugby player and high-level rower.

Hywel is an enthusiastic and approachable surgeon, and likes to remain active in sport. He is kept busy at home by three children, through whom he is now having to live his sporting ambitions. He lives in Bristol, and enjoys the local countryside.
