Thyroid and Parathyroid
As an endocrine-trained surgeon, Mr Kirkby-Bott is particularly passionate about thyroid and parathyroid problems and has performed over 1,000 thyroid lobe and parathyroid gland excisions.
He uses a continuous nerve monitor during the operation and intra-operative PTH monitoring during parathyroid surgery to improve patient results and experiences.
He trained at 2 of the most prestigious endocrine surgery units in the world (Hammersmith Hospital, London and CHRU, Lille, France), won the prestigious Norman Tanner medal for work on parathyroid disease and was only the 4th UK surgeon to pass the FEBS(Endocrine) exam. James has been invited to teach on the National Masterclass in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery organised by the College of Surgeons for the past 3 years.
In addition to extensive clinical experience, he is equally committed to his research and has several scientific papers on the role of vitamin D in parathyroid surgery, several book chapters and the first textbook dedicated to Parathyroid disease, to his name.
Hernia Surgery
Mr Kirkby-Bott is the leading surgeon for the Hernia Clinic Hampshire and has repaired over 2,000 hernias.
Dedicated to helping hernia patients get back to life quicker with lower risks of recurrence and improved long-term comfort and results, Mr Kirkby-Bott offers valuable advice on hernia supports and a hernia surgery recovery exercise programme.
He specialises in local anaesthesia open hernia repair, which reduces the impact on the body, shortens recovery time and makes surgery accessible for people of all ages and health conditions. He also has extensive experience with laparoscopic hernia repairs.
Gallbladder Surgery
Mr Kirkby-Bott is extremely experienced in gallbladder removal using a keyhole technique and avoiding serious complications such as bile duct injury, and has performed over 750 urgent gallbladder operations.
He also helped set up and develop the trauma and acute surgery unit at UHS, which most frequently saw urgent gallbladder cases.
Lipoma Surgery
Lipoma surgery has become unreliably available on the NHS. If you have a lipoma that has been declined removal by your local hospital team I am happy to try and help you.
Dedication to Improving Patient Care
Mr Kirkby-Bott cares greatly about improving the quality of patient care and has previously been involved in numerous projects related to this.
For example, he set up set up an innovative clinical results programme for UHS and served as its Director (2018-2022), founded the Wessex Endocrine Society which provides patient-centred training and education in thyroid and parathyroid surgery across Wessex, and is Director of National Endocrine Audit Database - British Association of Endocrine Surgeons (2022 - present).
Mr Kirkby-Bott actively seeks out feedback from his patients and their experiences in order to continuously learn from it and improve his service and patient results. He has been awarded the iWantGreatCare Certificate of Excellence in 2022, 2023 and 2024 for consistently outstanding patient feedback.
