About
Mr Akbari is a Consultant Surgeon at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire (UHCW), specialising in General and Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) Surgery. His expertise lies in a broad spectrum of benign UGI and general surgical conditions.
After completing his higher surgical training at the renowned Oxford UGI Specialist Centre, Mr. Akbari was awarded the UK’s first Royal College of Surgeons-approved fellowship in robotic UGI surgery. He subsequently served as a consultant in high-volume centers in Oxford and Birmingham, where he gained extensive experience in advanced UGI and bariatric procedures.
Since joining UHCW in 2023, Mr Akbari has pioneered the hospital’s robotic bariatric program and introduced state-of-the-art minimally invasive oesophagectomy and gastrectomy services. He also performs fully robotic cancer resections, focusing on enhancing patient outcomes through precision and innovation.

Actively involved in research on a variety of surgical topics and have presented in national and international conferences and has been awarded prizes for some of his work.
He has participated in large multicentre collaborative studies in Upper GI conditions which has been published in reputable journals. He regularly attends national and international society meetings to keep his knowledge and skills updated. He has also started a journal club in his current post where up to date publications are discussed.
