About
Lachlan is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon with a special interest in hand surgery and skin cancer surgery. He was appointed as an NHS consultant at Derriford Hospital in 2008.
Educated at Blundell’s school in Devon, Lachlan then moved to St Thomas’s Hospital in London for his medical training in 1986, qualifying as a doctor in 1991 with honours in surgery and a First Class degree in Anatomy. He completed his Basic Surgical training in Bristol, becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1996.
He completed his Plastic Surgery training in the south west and then spent eighteen months in Australia and New Zealand completing Fellowships in Orthopaedic Hand Surgery, Paediatric Hand Surgery and Microsurgery at the prestigious Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.
He was awarded the Mark Hannah research fellowship in 1999 and returned to the UK to work at the Blonde McIndoe Centre for medical research in East Grinstead where he completed an MD in wound healing. He was awarded the European Tissue Repair society award in 2002. During his time there he published and presented numerous research papers on plastic surgery and hand surgery.
His interest in hand trauma such as tendon
and nerve injuries, complex hand fracture and traumatic amputations has
allowed him to restore hope and function to a legion of patients over the
last decade.
As a
hand surgeon he commonly sees a wide range of non-emergency hand conditions
such as arthritis, carpal tunnel, tendinitis, nerve entrapment, dupuytren’s
contracture, trigger finger, ganglions, finger, thumb and hand pain. He is able
to offer interventions to alleviate pain, preserve joint function, and improve
a patient’s quality of life.
His experience at Derriford hospital and also privately at the Nuffield hospital over the last 15 years has given him an ability to provide personalised and compassionate care to patients, recognising the profound impact that hand-related conditions can have on daily life and functionality. He will create a comprehensive treatment plan offering both surgical and non-surgical options to restore mobility and dexterity, alleviate pain and aide a rapid return of function and return to work.
He is also actively involved in the management of skin lesions and skin cancers and collaborates with Derriford hospital's multidisciplinary team (MDT) specialising in skin cancer care.
