About

I am a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and up to March 2023 was also employed at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. The units I have worked within, offer the full range of oral and maxillofacial services for both adults and children. I was appointed as a Consultant in September 2003 following comprehensive training in oral and maxillofacial surgery, including dual qualifications in medicine and dentistry and fellowships in dental surgery, general surgery, and maxillofacial surgery.

I have been an integral member of the Oxford trauma service, helping to establish the craniofacial trauma service and have extensive experience in the management of TMJ disorders, facial pain, facial deformity, and salivary gland disease. I also carry out paediatric maxillofacial surgery and I am also involved in temporomandibular joint reconstruction. This latter aspect of my service is related to both congenital disease in children and temporomandibular joint replacement in adult patients with degenerative joint disease.

I am registered with the General Medical Council, and I am a member of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) and of the British and European Associations of Temporomandibular Joint Surgeons. I have previously been the UK lead for the specialist TMJ group, and I am a board member and the immediate past President of the European Society. I am also the immediate past president of the Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group (SORG), which is a pan-European teaching and research network. I am a past member of the European and International Societies of Craniofacial Surgery. In addition, I am a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

I am actively involved in training, education and research. Previous posts have included the Training Programme Director for oral and maxillofacial surgery in the region and Divisional Educational Lead within the Oxford University Hospitals Trust. I have in the past been a tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Chairman of the local speciality training committee for OMFS and Clinical Director of the OMFS departments in Oxford and Buckinghamshire. My training in dentistry, medicine, general surgery and maxillofacial surgery has all been within the United Kingdom with a sabbatical period in the United States. As part of my training and education commitments, I have been an Advanced Trauma and Life Support faculty member. I have chaired adult and paediatric maxillofacial surgery courses and contributed to numerous courses, lectures and demonstrations in the United Kingdom, Europe and worldwide.
