About
Mr Nick Smith is a consultant specialist knee surgeon. His private practice is based at Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital and his NHS practice is at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.
Having done prestigious fellowships in Exeter and Bristol, Mr Smith visited world famous surgeons in the USA to learn sub-specialist surgical techniques that he has adapted and uses in his practice. He has a sub-specialist interest in knee ligament reconstruction operations, cartilage restoration procedures, osteotomy and partial or total knee replacement including robotic-arm assisted knee replacements using Mako SmartRobotics™, which provides a more precise replacement and soft tissue balancing ensuring optimum functional outcome for patients.
Mr Smith has a strong research interest, having completed a PhD in meniscal transplantation, and being the first person to complete a randomised controlled trial on the subject worldwide. He has over 40 peer reviewed publications, book chapters and review articles on knee surgery. He has also presented to international audiences on the subject. He now has one of the highest volume meniscal transplantation practices in the UK, and performs meniscal repair surgery, including meniscal root repairs.

Research
Having completed a PhD in meniscal transplantation, Mr Smith has continued to publish high level research papers in knee surgery. He is a co-applicant on a £1.3 million worldwide trial on meniscal transplantation which will provide definitive evidence on the subject.
He has authored a series of publications on allografts in knee surgery, which showed osteochondral allografts to be highly clinically and cost effective. In addition, a publication on allograft use in ACL reconstruction has provided the best current evidence, which is used by surgeons to inform patients of the benefits and risks of ACL allografts.
He is also currently taking part in a worldwide trial, comparing quadriceps tendon to patellar tendon grafts for ACL reconstruction.
Other recent publications include multi-ligament knee surgery, and outcomes following partial knee replacement.
