About
Mr Oliver Bowes is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust where he provides a general NHS ophthalmology service and specialty services in corneal disease. He is also the clinical lead for cataract surgery and clinical governance lead for Ophthalmology. He has extensive training in refractive cataract surgery aiming to significantly reduce the dependence of spectacles after surgery. Having completed two corneal fellowships at Cambridge University Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital, he also undertakes all forms of modern corneal transplantation as well as corneal collagen cross-linking for keratoconus and laser capsulotomy after cataract surgery.
Oliver qualified from University College London Medical School with Distinction in Medical Sciences in 2009 and has won numerous academic prizes as well as a commendation for the prestigious Duke Elder Prize for Ophthalmology. During his residency training in Cambridge, he was Chair of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Trainee Group and undertook the Cambridge University Chief Residents Programme.
He is engaged in research and teaching and has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. He frequently lectures in the UK as well as internationally and has run several wetlab surgical training courses for trainee surgeons. He is also a surgical trainer for UK ophthalmology trainees.
Prior to Medicine, he read Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, completed a Research Internship in New York and worked as a Corporate Finance Executive for KPMG in London.
Oliver is recognised by all the major insurers and is also happy to see self pay patients. He is recognised as a specialist with the General Medical Council and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth). He is also a member of the European and UK and Ireland Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS, UKISCRS).
