About

Mr Oliver Gosling completed his undergraduate medical training in Bristol in 2008. As a keen medical educator, he taught anatomy at Bristol University before undertaking his Core Surgical Training at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton. He completed his higher surgical training, including a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, on the Bristol rotation in 2019.

Mr Gosling was appointed as a full-time trauma and orthopaedic consultant specialising in primary and revision hip and knee replacement at Musgrove Park Hospital in February 2019.

He took up this post in August 2020 following a specialist overseas fellowship under Professor Andrew Bucknill at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Here he developed his expertise in both primary and revision hip and knee replacement including the use of robotics and computerised navigation.

He has maintained his passion for medical education as an Educational Supervisor, supporting our local post-graduate doctors in training.

Mr Gosling is also a departmental lead for audit (ensuring quality of work) and compliance with NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) joint replacement guidelines.

Outside of work Mr Gosling is a keen cyclist and can often be found ascending the local hills on his road bike or walking with his wife and young daughters.

Related experience

Research

Mr Gosling was engaged in research throughout his postgraduate training. He has published on surgical techniques in hip trauma surgery, survivorship of total hip replacement bearing materials, acetabular reconstruction in cancer and the regulation and economics of generic joint replacement implants. He continues to recruit into multi-centre research trials.

He has also carried out peer reviews for the journal Hip International.
