About
Mr Nichols graduated from Leeds University in 1989 following two years of research towards an MD. He did his initial training in Leeds and Bristol before joining the Wessex registrar training programme. He spent three years in dedicated colorectal training at Portsmouth, Southampton and Sydney, Australia.
Since his consultant appointment in 2001, he took a number of sabaticals to Hong Kong and Europe to establish an expertise in laparoscopic colorectal surgery.
As of January 2015 he has performed over 250 laparoscopic colorectal procedures with excellent results. All of his surgical data is audited locally and nationally – with cancer data published annually via the ACP website.
Mr Nichols practice covers all areas of laparoscopic colorectal surgery, with a main focus on colorectal cancer and a particular interest in low rectal surgery (using Laparoscopic Total Mesorectal Excision or TME). Other areas of interest include: colonoscopy and a wide range of minor perineal conditions including pilonidal disease – in which he specialises in complex recurrent disease.
As a well trained General Surgeon he also performs hernia repairs and other minor and intermediate surgery.
Personal interests
Mr Nichols is married with two delightful daughters. He follows all sports and is an active gym member and social runner. In his spare time he loves the theatre, reading and travel.
