About
Mr Pieter le Roux is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Epsom and St Helier, St George’s and The Royal Marsden hospitals. His main areas of expertise are renal and adrenal surgery, complex reconstructive surgery and urological oncology. He is one of the highest-volume kidney surgeons in the UK, performing more than 100 nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy and partial nephrectomy procedures per year.
Mr le Roux studied medicine at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. He completed his basic surgical training in the UK, obtaining the FRCS in London in 1996. He trained in Urology at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town and was appointed Consultant Urologist and Senior Lecturer at Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch University Medical School in 2000. His training in laparoscopic urology included attachments with Indirber Gill in Cleveland and Chris Eden in Basingstoke. In 2002 Mr le Roux was awarded the Storz prize, a travelling fellowship awarded once every two years by the South African Urological Association to the outstanding young urologist in South Africa.
Mr le Roux joined Epsom and St Helier in 2002 and St George’s in 2008. He set up the laparoscopic urology service at Epsom and St Helier and introduced GreenLight laser prostatectomy at Epsom Hospital and Spire St Anthony's Hospital. As Urology Cancer Lead at Epsom and St Helier, he was instrumental in Epsom winning the bid to be one of the pilot sites for the RAPID prostate pathway investigating men with suspected prostate cancer.
Mr le Roux’s main research interests are in oncology and minimally invasive surgery. He is a member of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Renal Cancer Studies group, advising nationally on trials in kidney cancer. Treatments carried out by Mr Pieter le Roux include: laparoscopic, open and robotic nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, adrenalectomy, laparoscopic and robotic pyeloplasty, TURP and bladder cancer resection.
