About

Mr Epaliyanage completed his medical degree and basic surgical training in Sri Lanka. After arriving in the UK, he had basic and advance neurosurgery training at King’s College hospital, London and as a senior trainee, he developed special interests in Neuro Oncology and Neuro Trauma.

Since 2012, he has worked as a consultant in Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre and Royal Sussex County Hospital. Mr Epaliyanage is currently the clinical lead for High Grade Glioma Brain Tumour Service and lead of the Neuro Oncology Multidisciplinary meeting. He also is the lead for the Head Injury Service.

His other special interest and passion is medical education and training. He has been a Clinical and Educational supervisor and a senior educator and trainer and is involved in teaching and examining medical students of Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Mr Epaliyanage is a member of the FRCS neurosurgery exam question writing panel. He is also the Cranial Patient Safety Lead in the department and puts patient safety and satisfaction first.

Research

Mr Epaliyanage is the principal investigator for the national MAST trial (pharmacological management of seizures post traumatic brain injury) and has been a Co-Principal Investigator for many neurosurgical clinical trials in the UK. He has published case reports and peer reviewed articles in national and international journals, and has presented in many national and international meetings. Mr Epaliyanage has conducted numerous local/department quality improvement projects and led in practice changes to ensure patient safety and outcomes.
