About
Mr Ravi Ray is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Nuffield Health Brentwood and specialises in Sports Injuries To The Shoulder & Elbow. These include impingement syndrome & bursitis of the shoulder, rotator cuff tears, frozen shoulders, shoulder & elbow osteo-arthritis, inflammatory arthritis, dislocations & instability, labral tears of the shoulder, acromio-clavicular joint pains & disruptions, peripheral nerve entrapment, biceps tears & ruptures, clavicle fractures, shoulder fractures, tennis elbow & golfer’s elbow (tendonitis) and upper limb & general trauma.
Mr Ravi Ray trained in London and the South-East of England. His fellowships are from Southampton University Hospitals and Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals in upper limb surgery.
Mr Ray is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Basildon University Hospital, Mid Essex & South Essex University Hospitals Group where he offers a thorough upper limb service in close partnership with his NHS colleagues. Since 2015 he has been the Unit Training Director. He is also Team Leader for the Trauma Overhaul Project and an Appraiser.
With a keen interest in Sports Medicine, Mr Ray obtained a Diploma in this field and has put it to good use, looking after amateur boxers as an accredited England Boxing Doctor and professional rugby players at the London Irish Rugby Football Club.
In addition, Mr Ravi Ray is also working towards a Masters in Clinical Education based at King’s College in London and is an enthusiastic medical educator. He takes his duty of pastoral care of junior doctors very seriously and endeavours to further address the educational needs of Healthcare Professionals from various backgrounds.
Mr Ray uses the latest techniques in keyhole and open surgery, keeping himself updated through regular regional, national and international meetings, conferences and case discussions with colleagues.
Mr Ray is highly active in national recruitment of junior doctors into Orthopaedics, regularly scrutinises his own practice through audit and has written many pieces of research, presenting some internationally.
Other interests
Mr Ray has a very keen interest in teaching and is thus studying towards a Masters in Clinical Education.
Through an interest in clinical leadership, Mr Ray is leading an overhaul of the trauma service at Basildon Hospital.
Personal interests
In his spare time, Mr Ray enjoys playing golf and spending time with his wife and young boys.

Mr Ray has researched and published on cost effective traction for shoulder surgery, systematic reviews on shoulder stabilisation outcomes, case reports on clavicle excisions, joint injections on patients on warfarin, and outcomes after frozen shoulder treatment.
Current research has focussed on use of technology in the form of social media to support junior doctors’ clinical and educational needs.
Mr Ray is looking to lead a randomised controlled trial into injections of hyaluronic acid into shoulders.
