About
Robert Middleton studied medicine at Cambridge University before moving to Guys Hospital in London to complete his medical training. He trained as a surgeon at a number of teaching hospitals including Kings College Hospital, University College Hospital and The Middlesex Hospital. His orthopaedic surgical training was at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore. He completed this as a Senior Registrar at the Middlesex Hospital London.
He then trained internationally receiving an AO Trauma Fellowship to train and work in Fribourg in Switzerland. He was then awarded a travelling fellowship from both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Kings Fund London to receive sub-specialist training in complex hip surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia. He was appointed as an Orthopaedic Consultant specialising in hip and revision hip surgery at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in 1999.
He provides orthopaedic elective services specialising in hips at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and is an Orthopaedic Trauma Consultant at Poole Hospital. In addition to providing clinical services for patients, he runs a well-recognised training programme for orthopaedic surgeons both in the UK and internationally to train in hip disorders. He lectures and runs workshops both nationally and internationally in the latest developments of hip surgery and surgical techniques. In 2008 he was appointed by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement as Clinical Lead in hip and knee replacement in England.
Robert Middleton is involved in research and had held posts at the University of Adelaide and Australia as a visiting clinical lecturer and in 2008 was appointed as a visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University.

Robert Middleton leads a hip research team at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital specializing in international randomized controlled trials looking into hip replacement. He has published and lectured internationally on computer navigated surgery, minimally invasive surgery and hip resurfacing.
