Mr Shashi Murthy

After finishing his basic medical degree, Mr Murthy completed a five-year structured West Midlands Regional Specialist Registrar Training Programme in Ophthalmology based at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre. This programme provided him with clinical and surgical experience in all ophthalmic subspecialties. It was followed by two years of prestigious Glaucoma and Cataract Fellowships. 

Mr Murthy completed his Glaucoma and Cataract Fellowship with Prof Phillip Bloom at the Western Eye Hospital in London. The Western Eye Hospital is a well-known specialist eye teaching hospital and part of the Imperial College, London. Prof Phillip Bloom is a nationally recognized and acclaimed glaucoma and cataract surgeon.   

Following the UK Fellowship, Mr Murthy then completed another year of Advanced Glaucoma Fellowship with Dr M A Latina, MD, at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, US. The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary is an internationally renowned teaching hospital at Harvard University. It is one of the world’s top Eye Hospitals and is consistently ranked in the top 5 Eye Hospitals in the US. Dr Latina is the inventor of selective laser trabeculoplasty a very effective and safe laser procedure for glaucoma, which is now recommended by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence), UK as the first line treatment for newly diagnosed glaucoma patients.   

Mr Murthy regularly carries out a variety of glaucoma procedures, including mitomycin-augmented trabeculectomies and glaucoma tube surgery, such as the Baerveldt and Paul glaucoma tube implants. He also performs Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Procedures (MIGS) either as standalone interventions or in conjunction with cataract surgery (Phacoemulsification). These include iStent implantation, Gonioscopy-Assisted Transluminal Trabeculotomy/Abinterno Cannaloplasty (GATT/ABiC) using both the iTrack Catheter and the Omni Device, as well as the Preserflo shunt implant.

Mr Murthy has extensive experience in carrying out the most modern micro-incision cataract surgery, including on eyes with complex or challenging cataracts and high-risk patients such as those with Pseudoexfoliative glaucoma and Primary angle closure glaucoma.

Mr Murthy routinely conducts a variety of glaucoma laser procedures, including selective laser trabeculoplasty, laser iridotomy, laser iridoplasty, and micropulse cyclodiode laser photocoagulation.
