About
Mr Liau is a recognised expert in minimally invasive hepatobiliary & pancreatic (HPB) surgery, specialising in keyhole procedures (robotic & laparoscopic) for gallbladder disease, pancreatic conditions, and liver malignancies. With over 20 years of experience in managing gallstone disease, he has spent the last decade at Addenbrooke’s Hospital handling complex gallstone cases, including bile duct injuries following cholecystectomy, at the tertiary Cambridge HPB Surgical Unit.
A pioneer in advanced minimally invasive HPB surgery, he has been instrumental in developing robotic surgery in Cambridge. As Chair of the Robotic Surgery Steering Group, he established multispecialty robotic surgical services at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and led the development of robotic HPB surgery.
Currently, he serves as the Clinical Lead of the Cambridge HPB Surgical Unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Previously, he was the Lead Clinician for the Cambridge and East of England HPB Cancer Specialist MDT (2019–2021), overseeing referrals from eight regional hospitals. His leadership ensured a world-class service aligned with research driven by patient needs, with all his patients treated within the NHS between 2012 and 2024.
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Liau is an Office Bearer (Honorary Treasurer) and Elected Council Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He previously chaired the Surgical Specialty Board in General Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
His surgical training took him to Cambridge, Toronto, Hong Kong, Paris, and Edinburgh. He completed fellowships in HPB Surgical Oncology and Abdominal Multiorgan Transplantation at Toronto General Hospital, Canada, and in Advanced Laparoscopic HPB Surgery at L'Institut Mutualiste Montsouris, Paris, France. He is a proud alumnus of the Toronto HPB Fellowship Programme - one of North America’s most prestigious and internationally recognised HPB training programmes.
Mr Liau’s contributions to the field have earned him global recognition. He was the first UK surgeon to receive the International Hepatopancreatobiliary Association (IHPBA) Kenneth Warren Fellowship. He was also awarded the prestigious Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) Moynihan Travelling Fellowship, which took him to Seoul, South Korea, to advance his expertise in laparoscopic and robotic HPB surgery. Additionally, he was the first UK surgeon to be honoured with the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT, USA) Karen and Josef Fischer International Travelling Fellowship.
He is an appointed Examiner for the FRCS exams (UK Intercollegiate Surgical Board), Joint Specialty Fellowship exams (Hong Kong, Singapore) and MRCS exams (UK, Pakistan). He was a Member of NHS England Specialised HPB Clinical Reference Group (CRG) and Member of RCS England Invited Review Mechanism.
