About
Stephen is head of the Vitreoretinal unit at University Hospital Southampton where he has been a consultant for over 10 years treating the full range of retinal diseases from complex trauma and diabetes to elective macula holes and Epiretinal membrane and emergency retinal detachment as well as cataract surgery including complex cataract surgery.
He initially trained as an optometrist winning a national prize in his professional examinations and is committed to treating patients alongside his optometric colleagues. He then studied medicine at University of Southampton winning a prize for his performance in medical finals and was runner up two years in a row in the National Ophthalmology Duke Elder exam.
Stephen then trained as an ophthalmologist around the Wessex region and completed his MBA graduating with the top mark in his year. He then spent a year in Melbourne Australia to complete his Fellowship in Vitreo retinal surgery taking up his post as Consultant at Southampton on his return.
He regularly lectures to Optometrists, GPS and medical students and runs a course for consultants on dislocated lens management with the Royal College, an area he has particular expertise.
