About
Mr Pencavel graduated from the Royal Free Campus of the Royal Free and University College Medical School, Univ of London, in 2003. After initial basic surgical training in North London, he undertook a period of research at the Institute of Cancer Research and was awarded his PhD in 2013. His Higher Surgical Training was within the North West Thames deanery and included subspecialist HPB training at the Royal Marsden, Hammersmith and Royal Surrey hospitals. He went on to a post-CCT fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the Royal Marsden prior to being appointed as a locum consultant at the Royal Surrey in 2018, becoming substantive in 2019.
He has specific clinical interests in minimally-invasive HPB surgery, having developed an almost completely laparoscopic or robotic practice as a consultant. He has also developed, with colleagues, a percutaneous approach to difficult-to-manage gallstones. As a result of his training at all levels in the Sarcoma and Rare Tumours unit he also has an interest in both benign and malignant soft-tissue lesions, including triage and initial assessment.
He has published a number of papers across the fields of HPB and soft-tissue surgery, and retains an active role in clinical research.
