About
Gary Misson has been practising cataract and general ophthalmology at the Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital since 1997. He is the senior consultant at Warwick Hospital, having been appointed in 1997 following a consultancy at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre.
His duties then, as now, remain focused on the cataract service where he introduced small incision phacoemulsification surgery, routine daycase surgery, the use of foldable implants, topical anaesthesia, and other innovations that are now common practice.
Performing over 500 cataract procedures annually for over 15 years, his audited complication rate of 1.15% (2012-2013) is well below national figures and he has a high degree of patient satisfaction. Although primarily a cataract surgeon, he has wide experience in all aspects of general ophthalmology and was previously in overall charge of the glaucoma service at Warwick Hospital.
Training at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School (now Imperial College, London), he had a distinguished undergraduate career winning numerous prizes, awards and scholarships including prizes in medicine, surgery and ophthalmology. After an academic post teaching anatomy, he went on to continue postgraduate clinical training in ophthalmology at Oxford, Birmingham and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
His training, often by seniors of international renown, was in all major ophthalmic subspecialties including cornea, external eye disease, medical and surgical retina, paediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology and glaucoma.
Other interests
Despite a busy clinical service career, Professor Misson remains academically active having held academic posts and lecturing at the Universities of London, Birmingham, Aston and Warwick. In addition to his medical degrees he has degrees in physiology, mathematics and a PhD in bio-optical engineering.
