About

Professor Timperley is a Fellowship trained specialist in hip replacement surgery. He has completed a PhD studying the socket component of total hip replacement.

Professor Timperley's sub-specialities include Primary, complex primary and revision total hip replacement surgery and soft tissue repair of the hip.

In August 2010 Professor Timperley was recognised by the Daily Mail in an article about the UK's Top 10 Hip Surgeons. Uniquely, the study canvassed the views of top orthopaedic surgeons across the country and asked them “if your own nearest and dearest were to need a total hip replacement, who would you refer them to and why?” Impressively, Professor Timperley was described as “the leader of evidence-based hip surgery” who does “everything to the highest level, from the preparation through to the procedure and aftercare”.

Career History

Professor Timperley carried out his postgraduate education in the North West of England, the South West, London and the Midlands. In 1990 he undertook two years of research as a Hip Fellow under the supervision of Professor Ling OBE. He was awarded a British Orthopaedic Association Wishbone Trust grant to carry out research. He was subsequently awarded the John Charnley Research Fellowship to travel to centres of excellence in North America and also a Johnson & Johnson Clinical Fellowship which was based in Ohio, USA. During this period he gained experience in all aspects of Hip and Knee replacement surgery.

He was appointed a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Exeter in 1994 and his practice now concentrates exclusively on primary, complex primary and revision total hip and knee replacements.

Since taking up his Consultant position he has completed a PhD degree at the University of Oxford. His research interest continues in the academic Hip Unit in Exeter and he is supervising several higher degrees in collaboration with Bath University. He is an Industrial Steering Team Member for the Centre for Orthopaedic Biomechanics at the University of Bath and also an International member of the Educational advisory board for the Homer Stryker Center based in Mahwah, New Jersey.

He has been elected to the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association.

Professor Timperley is Chairman of the Exeter Hip Foundation (Surgery, Training and Research) LLP.
