About
Professor Parkes is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. Appointed as a consultant in 2001 he was clinical director for gastroenterology 2004-2018 and is now Director of the Cambridge University Hospital Biomedical Research Centre. He has a particular interest and expertise in diagnostic gastroenterology, including endoscopy and colonoscopy, and management of Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, coeliac disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
He undertakes all private diagnostic endoscopy/colonoscopy himself and works closely with
colleagues in radiology, pathology, surgery and dietetics to ensure appropriate investigations and treatments for his patients. With a caring and friendly manner in
the clinic and outside, he has extensive experience of the full range of
medical and dietary therapies for gastroenterological disease.

Research
Professor Parkes clinical and research focus is on inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome - researching the genetic and environmental causes of Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and IBS and understanding how better to treat these conditions.
He chairs the international IBD genetics research consortium and has published extensively in the medical literature and he teaches and lectures internationally. He was appointed as Professor of Translational Gastroenterology by the University of Cambridge in 2020.
