What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a profession whose aim is to encourage and support the return to normal following illness, surgery, disease or trauma. It can be effective in the treatment of a range of muscle, joint and nerve conditions.

Physiotherapists use a wide range of techniques such as manual therapy and exercise prescription to maintain health for people of all ages, helping patients to manage pain and prevent disease.

We can offer expertise in upper limb and hand rehabilitation, pain management programmes and post-surgical recovery. Many of our therapists are also trained in Pilates, Acupuncture and Joint Manipulation, carrying out thorough biomechanical assessments to enhance and optimize function.

We retain strong ties with orthopaedic consultants based at our Leicester Hospital and have an excellent track record in the rehabilitation of upper and lower limb sports injuries. In addition, we can offer pre and post natal treatment and advice as well as vertigo and balance rehabilitation with our vestibular specialist.

Aquatic therapy

Our gym physiotherapists are trained in delivering aquatic therapy. This can be delivered in 1-2-1 sessions or in small groups.

Aquatic therapy is beneficial for a vast array of musculoskeletal and neurological injuries and rehabilitation and can be used to treat non-surgical, surgical and neurological conditions in the early and latter parts of recovery from injury. Due to the therapeutic effects of being in water can be hugely beneficial in the recovery by providing:

  • Assistance in the removal of swelling/oedema from the lower extremities following injury or surgery
  • Develop muscle tone as resistance in water can be 600-700 times more than air, while also providing assistance to movement pain-free through buoyancy
  • Decrease pain through relaxation, heat therapy and body weight relief improve balance and reduction of fear of falling
