An aneurysm is a thickening or bulge in the wall of an artery. In some cases surgical repair of the aorta may be necessary if an aneurysm is present.

The aorta is the largest artery in your body. It runs through your chest (thoracic aorta) and down through your abdomen (abdominal aorta).

Following your abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) scan your consultant will advise on the size and location of any aneurysm. Depending on the size they will advise you about lifestyle, diet and any treatment that may be appropriate.

What happens during aortic aneurysm repair?

The surgical technique used by your surgeon will depend on your particular situation. Traditional methods include cutting out the bulging section of the aorta and repairing it using a graft.

More recent methods include endovascular treatment where a thin tube is passed up one of the arteries in your leg and fixed to a strong area of the wall of your aorta.

Be sure and discuss which surgical method will be used with your consultant.
