Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a procedure to investigate and treat problems with your womb such as heavy or abnormal bleeding, abnormal growths (polyps) or cancer of the womb.

What happens during a D&C?

A D&C is usually performed under general anaesthetic and takes 15-30 minutes. It is sometimes performed along with a hysteroscopy. Your consultant will widen the neck womb (cervix) using either medication or small surgical instruments.  An instrument called a curette will be used to scrape away the lining of your womb.

After a D&C

After your D&C you will be taken to a recovery area so we can monitor you while you recover from any anaesthetic. You may have mild cramping and light spotting (bleeding). Be sure and tell us if you are in any pain. You should be able to go home the day of your procedure. Be sure an arrange for someone to drive you as you will not be able to drive for at least 24 hours after having anaesthetic.Take over the counter pain relief such as paracetamol for any pain. Follow your consultant’s advice regarding returning to normal activities and work.

As with any surgical procedure there could be complications including:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection

Specific complications of a D&C may include:

  • Damage to the womb or cervix
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Cramping or period like pain
  • Scar tissue formation
