Mr Carrothers has been an Orthopaedic Consultant since 2012, being appointed as a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon at Addenbrookes Hospital Cambridge and subsequently as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Cambridge School of Medicine.

Andrew’s clinical practice is based on the key principles of listening, observing and learning, understanding the needs of his patients is at the core of his caring philosophy. His primary goal is to provide his patients with the best and most up to date evidence based treatment to ensure that they get back on track and resume daily activities as soon as possible.  If you would like to read individual patient reviews please visit his website where you will find over 120 patient independent 5* reviews.

Mr Andrew Carrothers has been awarded the iWantGreatCare Certificate of Excellence in 2017, 2018 and 2019, highlighting the consistent high quality of care he provides for his patients.

Regenerative therapies form a core part of Andrew’s practice specifically PRP and N-stride. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used to relieve the symptoms of persistent and on-going tendon pain, the platelets and plasma are believed to have natural healing properties that encourage the damaged tendons to repair and heal themselves. They may do this by stimulating the production of collagen, which is an important component of tendon and ligament tissue.

The N-stride injection is used to treat osteoarthritis of the hip and knee and was developed to provide relief from pain without surgery. It has been shown to be most effective in people with mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the hip and knee with the benefits of pain relief, reduction in stiffness and inflammation, restored mobility and flexibility and an improvement in cartilage health.

Andrew has a specialist interest in minimally invasive hip and knee surgery and is a member of the group of surgeons known as SMART (Specialist Mako Assisted Robotic Team) based at the hospital. The robot works alongside the surgeon from the pre-surgery planning stage through to assisting in the surgery, improving accuracy and precision.  This state-of-the-art system allows the surgeon to perform a total hip, total knee or a uni-compartmental knee replacement using a minimally invasive technique that causes less damage to muscles, reduces post-operative pain and speeds recovery. In relation to minimally invasive hip replacement surgery, Andrew is happy to discuss the risks and benefits of both the mini posterior approach and direct anterior approach.

For some knee replacements Andrew uses the 3D printed patient customised iTotal Conformis knee implants which are individually designed and manufactured for you, providing a perfect, customised fit that mimics the natural shape of your knee. An implant that is sized and shaped to your precise measurements allows more natural, pain-free movement of the joint. Patients experience less pain after surgery and there is less wear and tear on the implant, meaning that it may last longer. More of the patient’s own healthy bone and ligaments can be preserved and, over time, it is hoped that individuals who have a customised knee replacement experience more stability and more function in the knee.

With increasing numbers of people participating in a wide range of sporting activity Andrew dedicates a significant amount of his private practice to lower limb sporting injuries encompassing a comprehensive review of the whole weight bearing lower limb. Injuries to the pelvis, hip and knee are common and there are various treatment options available. It’s important to understand that a sports injury can lead to chronic problems if left untreated.  Common sports injuries include strains and sprains, knee ligament injuries, swollen muscles, shin splints and fractures. Andrew has over 80 peer-reviewed publications and he lectures nationally and internationally on a wide range of joint replacement and trauma reconstructive topics. He is a Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Royal Army Medical Corps. For further information on his publications please search “Andrew Carrothers” on Google Scholar
