Sports profiles include a range of tests to assess the impact of exercise on your bodily functions and physical state.
More information about buying sports profile blood tests can be found on our FAQs page.
Factors assessed may include:
Haematology: Full Blood Count (FBC) tests for blood disorders such as leukaemia, anaemia, and blood clotting. Blood is approximately 55% liquid (serum) and 45% solid (red cells, white cells and platelets). Red cells carry oxygen and nutrients and have a natural cycle of replacement. Reticulocytes are immature red cells. White cells protect against infection and platelets aid coagulation.
Biochemistry: Kidney (renal) function and fluid balance is assessed by measuring electrolytes (sodium and potassium), urea and creatinine along with eGFR. Liver function is monitored by testing for specific enzymes and proteins. Bone and muscle health can also be assessed using enzymes and calcium, with glucose used to identify diabetes risk. C-reactive protein is used to detect inflammation.
Immunoassays: Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is often the first test used to evaluate thyroid and pituitary function. Ferritin is linked to long term iron storage and can also be affected by infection and long term liver damage. Testosterone in this profile is used to monitor muscle and bone health and overall wellbeing in males. The hormone cortisol is helps to suppress inflammation and aid bone formation along with activating anti-stress pathways. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with impaired bone mineralisation and potential bone softening disease; as well as tendon and ligament damage.
