Hirsutism is the medical term for excess hair growth in women. It is a very common condition sometimes as a result of genetics (passed to you by your parents) or due to an imbalance in your hormones.

Women who have polycystic ovary syndrome often experience excess hair growth due to an increase in male hormones.

Excess hair can be treated using physical methods such as shaving, bleaching, waxing or electrolysis (electrical current to destroy the hair root). Other methods such as laser hair removal or intense pulsed light (IPL) are also available.

If a hormonal imbalance is confirmed, your consultant may recommend hormone treatment for excess hair. In many cases hormone treatment slows the hair growth and the hair becomes thinner and less noticeable.

The type of hormone prescribed will depend on your specific medical condition. Be sure and discuss any complications of hormone treatment with your consultant.
