Unlike your central nervous system, your peripheral nervous system is not protected by bone leaving it exposed to injury or toxins (poisons).

You have two nervous systems in your body. Your central nervous system (CNS) includes your brain and spinal cord. Your peripheral nervous system includes all nerves outside these areas.

Both voluntary and involuntary activities are controlled by your peripheral nervous system. It sends signals to your limbs enabling movement. It also controls areas of your body that function automatically such as your breathing, digesting food and organ function.

Symptoms of nerve injury or compression can include pain, numbness or pins and needles.

Peripheral nerve surgery may involve decompression (release) of the trapped or damaged nerve or removal of the nerve.

The extent of your surgery will depend on your own situation. Be sure and discuss any concerns you have with your surgeon.
