The risk of blood clots (thrombosis) during long haul flights is well documented. That’s why Nuffield Health includes a pre-travel deep vein thrombosis (DVT) risk screen and a thrombotic risk assessment in our extensive list of travel screen profiles.

Post-travel screens include the routine assessment of health following travel abroad. Tests include the most common parasitic diseases known to affect travellers.  As some tropical diseases can occur without symptoms for a period of time, a broad range of Haematology and Biochemistry tests are included, providing information on whole body wellbeing. Our Enhanced Post-travel Screen also includes tests for Hepatitis and HIV.

Geographically some diseases are confined to tropical areas, although many are not necessarily due to geographical factors like temperature, humidity and disease-carrying insects but to poverty and to low standards of public health, unhygienic food handling and lack of sanitary facilities. Contamination of food and water with human excrement causes intestinal infections such as typhoid and paratyphoid fever, cholera, amoebiasis, shigellosis, tapeworm and other parasitic infestations. Temperature and soil conditions are responsible for infestation due to hookworm and schistosomiasis. Insect borne diseases include malaria, yellow fever, sleeping sickness and leishmaniasis. Our Tropical Travel Screen will assess and identify any of these potential post-travel risks.
