Craniofacial reconstruction at Exeter Hospital
- Overview
Craniofacial reconstruction is surgery to correct congenital abnormalities (such as cleft lip) or trauma to the skull, face and jaw. This surgery may also be necessary following tumour removal.
What happens during craniofacial reconstruction?
The type and length of your procedure will depend on the extent of your own (or your child’s) condition. Your consultant will perform a thorough examination including a review of your medical history. They may take photos for a “before and after” comparison of the results of your procedure.
In some cases, a multidisciplinary team of experts including paediatricians, dentists, speech therapists and plastic surgeons may be involved in your treatment.
Our team of specialist physiotherapists will provide expert treatment, rehabilitation and advice during your hospital stay, and if appropriate follow-up as an outpatient to support your full recovery.
