At Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital, our experienced radiology team provides rapid access to a 3T MRI scan. A Radiologist will examine the images, and the results will be available for you, via your referring healthcare professional, within a few days

Why choose Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital for your 3T MRI scan?
Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital operates a state-of-the-art MRI suite, featuring a technologically advanced 3T MRI scanner. One of only a few in the region, our scanner is available throughout the week from 8am to 8pm, giving patients greater flexibility when booking appointments.
What is the difference between a 3T MRI scanner and a 1.5T MRI scanner?
The enhanced strength of the 3T scanner allows it to produce higher-quality images, particularly useful for examining conditions affecting the brain, spine, musculoskeletal system, and prostate. A 3T scanner can identify smaller lesions and anatomical structures compared to conventional 1.5T scanners.
Additionally, 3T MRI scanners provide faster imaging, reducing the time a patient spends inside the scanner bore. Our scanner also has a wider bore to improve patient comfort. The high-quality images help lower the risk of distortion and minimise the need for repeat scans, saving time and inconvenience.
If you feel nervous about your MRI scan, our experienced consultants and nurses in Guildford are friendly and approachable, ready to answer any questions you may have. For tips on staying calm during your MRI scan, check our patient resources
What is an MRI scan?
An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan is a safe and painless medical test that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body. It helps doctors assess your organs, tissues, and bones in detail, aiding diagnosis and monitoring of various conditions. MRI scans do not involve radiation and are generally very safe. Depending on the area being scanned, the procedure can last between 15 to 90 minutes. At Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital, your scan will be conducted by specially trained Radiographers.
How will I know if I need an MRI?
Your doctor may refer you for an MRI if more detailed imaging is required. Common reasons for an MRI include:
- Unexplained pain: Identifying the cause and location of persistent or severe pain.
- Injuries: Assessing damage to bones, muscles, and soft tissues following an injury.
- Neurological issues: Evaluating brain and spinal conditions such as tumours, strokes, or nerve disorders.
- Organ abnormalities: Detecting issues in organs like the heart, liver, kidneys, or reproductive organs.
- Monitoring chronic conditions: Tracking the progression of conditions like cancer and response to treatment.
How should I prepare for an MRI?
- Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing without metal objects (e.g., zips, snaps). Remove jewellery, watches, or piercings before the scan.
- Food and drink: You can usually eat and drink as normal unless advised otherwise.
- Medications: Inform your doctor about any medications you take. Most can be continued as usual.
- Medical devices: Inform your doctor if you have metal implants, pacemakers, or other devices, as some may not be compatible with the MRI scanner.
- Pregnancy: If you are pregnant or think you might be, let your doctor know, as MRI may not always be recommended during early pregnancy.
- Questions: If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to ask our team for guidance.
What happens during an MRI?
- Preparation: You will change into a hospital gown and remove metal objects. A contrast dye may be injected to enhance imaging if required.
- Positioning: You will lie down on a table, and the Radiographer will position you correctly.
- Entering the scanner: The table slides into a large, tube-shaped machine, which remains open at both ends.
- Noise: The machine makes tapping or knocking sounds during the scan. Earplugs or headphones will be provided, and music may be played for comfort.
- Communication: You can communicate with the Radiographer via an intercom system.
- Completion: After the scan, the Radiographer will assist you in leaving the machine. Additional images may be taken if necessary.
How long does an MRI take?
An MRI scan typically lasts between 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the number of body areas being scanned.
How/when will I receive my results?
Your results will be reviewed by a Radiologist and sent to your referring healthcare professional within a week. Some specialist scans may take longer—please check with the team at Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital for precise timelines. Your referrer may schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss the results.
